What is the difference between a filling and an Inlay / Onlay?
A conventional filling is layered directly into the tooth cavity in the chair. An Inlay or Onlay is an indirect restoration custom-crafted in our dental laboratory, providing superior anatomical fit, edge stability, and wear resistance for larger tooth defects.
When is an Inlay or Onlay recommended?
It is recommended when tooth damage is too extensive for a stable direct filling, but sufficient healthy tooth wall remains so that preparing the entire tooth for a full crown is unnecessary.
How many appointments are needed?
Typically two appointments. The first involves tooth preparation and impression taking, while the second involves checking the fit, bite harmony, and permanently bonding the restoration.
Is the treatment painful?
No. Preparation and bonding are performed under effective local anesthesia, ensuring complete comfort throughout the procedure.
How long can an Inlay or Onlay last?
Due to high-strength ceramic or composite materials and lab-grade precision, inlays and onlays are exceptionally durable, often providing a reliable chewing surface for many years with good oral hygiene.
When is a crown needed instead?
If the tooth walls are fractured below the gumline or the remaining tooth structure cannot securely support a partial restoration, a full crown may be the safer long-term choice.
